It occurs as a white crystalline substance insoluble in water but soluble in alcohol and acetic acid, with melting point at 165-167 °C. Salts of this carboxylic acid are called chenodeoxycholates. Chenodeoxycholic acid is one of the 4 main organic acids produced by the liver.

Application
1. It can be used for the prevention and treatment of cholesterol gallstones and hyperlipidemia, for courage primality stones and mixed stones have a certain effect. Mild symptoms, gallbladder function well, biliary obstruction in patients with no better effect. Long-term use of mild diarrhea, a small number of patients may have itching, dizziness, nausea and bloating, etc., individual patients may induce biliary colic and temporary elevated transaminase. Pregnant women, women of childbearing age, pancreatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, stomach and duodenal ulcer, hepatitis and biliary obstruction is disabled.
